PS..how sad is it that I'm writing an e-mail to Orion telling him about the outdoor play stuff (a sandbox..teeter totter..slide..horseshoes..croquet..etc) I want the boys (okay the horseshoes and croquet are for me..) to have and then adding that we never had outdoor play stuff when I was a kid and that I used to swim in puddles (seriously. before Rachel got a pool..there was this super deep puddle when it rained..behind the stamp/coin shop that I would totally go "swimming" in) and one of those camping shells/luggage shells..whatever they're called..for the top of a car. Totally. I know..lifestyles of the rich and the famous over here. Look out! Ah hahahaha!!!

Gangsta.

Shoot, we turned anything and everything into swimming pools.

That's how we rolled.

Hey, Mike and I were walking around the garden section of Home Depot the other day and we came across a Holly tree. Do you remember that huge one in our back yard that we would sit under (very carefully of course). That thing was enormous!

Of course I remember it..but my main memory about that thing is when dad left the guinea pigs out to "graze" overnight and then Butterscotch choked and died on one of those holly leaves. Traumatic, ya know.

The other day I found an old old notebook with some cartoons I did -- and a sketch of my plan for the backyard at One Dirty Tree. It was to have included one of those really nice playground-things with swings and ladders and bridges and slides shooting out in several directions, and I wanted to pave the area from where the car was parked back to the garage for Big Wheel riding and put up a basketball hoop.
Alas, it was not to be.

But one of my best memories of all of us in that house was that time it snowed and you kids made the tobaggan run from the porch, down the steps, down the front walk, down one more step, past The Tree, and up the side of one of the O'Connors' cars parked in front and buried in snow. It was at night, and half the neighborhood came over with their little plastic sleds and snow tubes. You were very small and didn't much want to try it -- but with so many bigger kids around, you didn't have a lot of choice. :o)

And you're right about the number of kids on the street. We had 9, the O'Connors next door had -- what? 11? And the Hendricksons across the street ended up, I think, with 10. And then there was everybody else.

Ah yes, mom..how could I forget? I remember basically being forced into going down that thing..and I also remember smacking into The Tree and then into the O'Connors' car thus spraining my wrist pretty badly. I remember having a hard time pulling my underwear down and up from potty use with one arm. I also remember sleeping in your bed because of it but you swear it never happened. I don't think dad was home though.

Hannah and Abby were too little, but I remember when we lived in the Thornburgh's house and they had an old horse trough in the back that was filled with water and algae and I would swim laps around it with my face under water. Anything to get cool!

And, Mom? I remember that snow ride well. I went down backwards and my teeth went right through my bottom lip when my chin slammed on the snow-packed stairs. It HURT! But it was fun. And it's okay that the dreams didn't come true. They served a purpose helping YOU to get through. :)

Chelsea? You spelled 'ghetto' correctly. You're not as bad as you thought! :)

I dream of a fantastic backyard too. It better hurry up! Lyns goes to college in 4 years! Yikes!

Abs-Go read my response to you and Hannah on the comments of my latest blog entry. I think it's a smashing good idea! Let me know what you think!

The saddest thing about that is that The Tree is gone. After Poltergeist came out, that tree gave me nightmares forever. The new owner had to cut it down i guess because it was, after all, One Dirty Tree. Now its just a silly well sitting there. It just looks dumb. Those stairs didn't end up making it did they? (creek, creek) LOL!!!

Haha Micah..The Tree was, afterall, right outside your bedroom window and I'm sure it didn't help that dad would always try to scare you guys by saying it would come in and grab you. He did love his torture. Good times..good times.

Abby! I was serious about the waterslide rendezvous this summer. Mom would come too and photograph...what do you think???

I think no one needs to see me in a swimsuit anytime soon. Hahaha..and I *really* don't need anyone taking pictures of that.

Are you JOKING ME??? You're about to head off to Hawaii, a place where no one can afford to visit you (except Mom), and you wouldn't risk a swimsuit (or even shorts and a tank) to have a last visit with your sisters???? C'mon, girl!

Abby said...

I never said I wouldn't visit if we DO have a layover in LA..I'm saying don't count on me getting in a swimsuit in front of all of you who have all had babies and still have fantastic bodies. You just wanna see me wet, Jenna...don't deny it! Hahaha Slow motion wet hair fling and all! I know you do! Teehee

Also..I looked up flights from Louisville to Honolulu around the time we'd be moving and they all say we'd either change planes in Houston or Phoenix and it's the army's dime anyway so we go on whatever flight they tell us to go on.
